Why Hydraulic Valves Fail Before the Pump Does
When an excavator slows down, most operators blame the main pump first. In practice, a worn relief valve or a sticking spool in the control valve will rob cycle speed long before the pump itself gives out. A relief valve that lifts 20 bar early quietly dumps flow back to tank on every stroke. A control valve spool that leaks internally lets oil bypass the cylinder while the pump is still healthy. Both faults show up as the same complaint: the machine feels tired, but nothing has obviously broken.
Valve faults are also cheaper and faster to fix than pump faults. Before you price a pump rebuild, spend an hour proving the valve circuit. The checks below cover the three valve families that cause most slow-cycle and drift complaints on modern excavators.
The Three Valve Families You Need to Test
|
Valve |
Symptom It Causes |
First Test |
|
Main relief valve |
Low overall pressure, slow all functions, weak digging |
Tee a gauge into pump delivery, dead-head a cylinder |
|
Control valve spool |
One function slow or drifting, others normal |
Compare function speeds, feel for spool binding |
|
Solenoid / pilot valve |
Function dead, erratic or stuck at one speed |
Check coil resistance, watch pilot pressure |
Table: Valve family symptoms and first test
Start with the family that matches your symptom. If every function is slow, go straight to the relief valve. If one function is slow while the rest are normal, go to the control valve. If a single function is dead or behaves erratically, test the solenoid or pilot circuit first.
Step 1 - Read the Main Relief Pressure
Fit a 600 bar gauge to the pump delivery line and dead-head a cylinder at low idle. Compare the reading against the specification for your model. On a Komatsu PC200-8 the main relief should hold close to 380 bar. If your gauge reads well below spec and shimming it back up does not hold, the valve is worn internally. A common replacement on these machines is the
723-40-93600 hydraulic main relief valve
, which fits PC200-8 and PC220-8. On PC200-7 and PC210 units the equivalent
723-40-56900 / 723-40-57200 relief valve
is the usual service part. Smaller PC60-7 machines use the
723-20-70500 main relief valve
.
Step 2 - Separate Relief Fault from Pump Fault
A weak pump and a weak relief valve produce almost identical gauge readings. To tell them apart, watch the case drain flow. If case drain rises sharply as pressure climbs, the pump is passing oil internally. If case drain stays steady but delivery pressure still sags, the relief valve is the suspect. A suction relief stuck partly open also drags down delivery pressure; the
723-40-91200 suction relief valve
is a frequent culprit on PC200-8 and PC200-7.
Step 3 - Test the Control Valve by Function
Warm the oil to working temperature, then time each function through a full stroke. A control valve spool that leaks internally will make exactly one function slow while the others stay sharp. Pull the spool and inspect the lands for scoring and varnish. Light varnish can be cleaned, but scored lands mean replacement. On Doosan DH200-5 and DH220-5 machines the
is often replaced together with the spool, because the two wear as a pair.
Step 4 - Check Pilot and Solenoid Circuits
Solenoid valves fail in two ways: the coil goes open circuit, or the spool sticks. Measure coil resistance cold and compare it against the other coils on the same machine. A reading more than twenty percent away from its neighbours is failing. Sticking spools usually respond to a pilot pressure check: if pilot pressure is correct but the function still will not move, the valve body is the problem. Hyundai R215-7 and R225-7 machines commonly need the
when pilot pressure drifts.
Step 5 - Confirm Before You Order
Once you have isolated the fault, confirm the part before you release a purchase order. Cross-check the machine serial number, the number cast on the original valve body, and the OEM number against the parts book. If the numbers do not agree, ask your supplier - a valve that fits the model but not the serial range will still bolt up and still be wrong. On Cat E320C, E320D and E323C machines the
is the standard service item. Kobelco SK350 owners usually need the

Repair or Replace: A Quick Decision
|
Condition |
Action |
Why |
|
Pressure low, adjustable back to spec, holds |
Adjust and retest in 250 h |
Valve is serviceable, no cost yet |
|
Pressure cannot hold after adjustment |
Replace valve |
Spring and seat are worn past recovery |
|
Spool varnish only, lands unmarked |
Clean, re-fit, change oil |
Cheapest fix, keeps matched spool |
|
Spool lands scored |
Replace valve and spool |
Scoring propagates and re-contaminates oil |
|
Coil open circuit, body clean |
Replace solenoid coil |
Body is reusable, coil is the failure point |
Table: Repair or replace decision matrix
Always flush the circuit and change the return filter after any valve replacement. Metal from a scored spool will travel through the whole system and damage the new valve within hours if you skip this step.
Common Mistakes That Cost a Second Repair
· Replacing the pump when the relief valve was lifting early. Check valve pressure first.
· Fitting a valve by model only. Serial range matters, especially on mid-life model updates.
· Skipping the filter change. Contamination from the failed valve kills the replacement.
· Ignoring pilot pressure. A correct solenoid cannot move a spool with no pilot supply.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my relief valve or my pump is faulty?
Fit a gauge to the pump delivery line and compare case drain flow. If case drain flow rises sharply with pressure, the pump is passing oil internally. If delivery pressure sags while case drain stays steady, the relief valve is the fault. Always check the relief pressure before pricing a pump rebuild.
Can I adjust a weak relief valve instead of replacing it?
You can add shims to restore pressure, and if the valve then holds its setting through a full temperature cycle, adjustment is a valid repair. If pressure will not hold after adjustment, the spring or seat is worn and the valve must be replaced.
Why is only one function slow on my excavator?
A single slow function points to the control valve spool for that circuit, not the main relief. Pull the spool and inspect the lands. Light varnish can be cleaned, but scored or galled lands require a new valve and spool matched as a pair.
