Komatsu PC130-11 makes a grand comeback, quickly filling the gap between small and medium-sized models.

Recently, the PC130-8, which left the North American market in 2011, has made a stunning comeback as the PC130-11. Why did Komatsu do this? What role does the PC130 series play in Komatsu's line of medium and small excavators? We will attempt to analyze the significance of the PC130-11 to Komatsu's excavator product line by comparing the PC130-8, PC130-11, and PC88.

Before this, the last PC130 series excavator Komatsu provided in North America was the PC130-8. This product began to be sold in 2008 and was withdrawn from the market in 2011. Komatsu stated that as an entry-level excavator, the main role of the new PC130-11 is to make up for the functional deficiencies of ordinary small and medium-sized excavators. This problem became particularly obvious after the PC130 series was withdrawn from the market. 
Many customers, especially small ones or those in the construction and utility sectors who are just starting to use excavators, find that Komatsu's smaller-tonnage excavators do not meet their needs. If the power is too high, the price will be too high and they cannot afford it. 
This might be the reason for the return of the PC130-11. 
Why is the PC88MR-10 unable to shoulder heavy responsibilities? 
Komatsu stated that their true objective is to develop a machine that falls between medium-sized and small-sized excavators. It should have a digging force of no more than 29,000 pounds, possess the performance level of a medium-sized excavator, and also feature the flexible site transfer capabilities of a small-sized excavator.
Previously, the PC88MR-10 excavator fulfilled this role. The PC88 was the largest machine in the small excavator series. However, its short tail design, to some extent, hindered its performance improvement. 
Furthermore, by observing the rotating arm, it can be determined that this is still a small excavator, specifically designed for working in narrow spaces. It is still a mini-excavator rather than a true medium-sized excavator. With a total machine weight of 19,000 pounds, an engine power of 68 hp, and a bucket capacity of 0.12 to 0.44 cubic meters, it is difficult to match it with the medium-sized PC138USLC-11.
Through the comparison of the above parameters and data, we have understood the significance of the PC130-11 regression. In terms of size, this excavator is neither a mini model nor a 20 or 30-ton excavator; it is lightweight and easy to transport. In terms of performance, it is a machine that truly matches the performance of the Komatsu medium-sized machinery lineup, which is something that the PC88 cannot offer. 
2. What are the new designs and highlights of the new PC130-11 excavator? 
Jon Jennings, the marketing manager for small excavators of Komatsu Corporation in North America, explained: "The design of the PC130-11 is centered around ease of transportation. Additionally, for underground excavation, pipeline excavation, and construction in narrow conditions, along with the application of small impact hammers, this excavator combines stable performance and the ability to quickly replace the impact hammers, making it still outstanding in narrow conditions."
The PC130-11 not only offers medium-sized power in a compact design, but also takes into account Komatsu's priority in ensuring its long-term durability in construction environments. 
Strengthened structure, enhanced heat dissipation: To achieve this, the arm support, arm and the end of the small arm of PC130-11 are all made of steel castings, reducing stress. This machine is also equipped with a two-stage air filter with an automatic dust collector, improving the heat dissipation performance of the radiator and the oil cooling performance. In addition, an engine overheating protection system is also set up. 
Engine and hydraulic system: The engine of the PC130 is equipped with a variable flow turbocharger and complies with the Tier 4 Final emission standards. Compared with the previous generation PC130-8, it has saved 12% of fuel consumption. The reduction in fuel consumption is attributed to the load-sensing hydraulic technology. Additionally, Komatsu has improved the main valve and hydraulic circuit of this machine to reduce hydraulic losses, thereby further saving fuel. Another improvement in the machine's hydraulic system is the new quick return arm valve, which can improve the hydraulic flow of the arm cylinder, allowing your arm to extend faster and enhancing the performance of the arm. 
Multi-mode option: This engine also offers six working modes that can be selected based on the current task, allowing for the optimal balance between fuel efficiency and performance. Komatsu states that these modes enable adjustments to the engine speed, the output of the pump, and the system pressure to match the application. 
The PC130-11 also features an automatic power-off function during idle periods, which helps to reduce non-productive idling time.
3. How is the condition of the cab and maintenance? 
From both the appearance and the feel, the PC130 and the PC170 are similar to the cab of larger equipment. 
Other functions of the cab include height-adjustable seats, heated seats, and electric control levers, making the operation more precise. The PC130-11 cab is also equipped with a new 7-inch LCD display. Additionally, there is a three-camera system, and the operator can choose to view individual views of each camera from the left, rear, and right sides. 
In terms of maintenance, this machine features an integrated cabin cover and centralized lubrication. One can easily check the engine oil and fuel filters while standing on the ground, making it convenient for repairs. The standard equipment includes fuel filters, fuel pre-filter with water separator, DEF storage tank and pump, as well as battery disconnect switch, all of which are within easy reach when standing on the ground. 
Summary: The PC130-11 offers rapid positioning. A supplementary model has been added between the medium-sized and small-sized Komatsu excavators, meeting the needs of rental users. With less investment, it can still meet the requirements of narrow working conditions. With the support of Komatsu's load-sensing system, fuel consumption is lower, and the high-end cab gives users a sense of good value for money.
