In response to the shortage of Nissan engine supplies, JFE Steel USA has temporarily switched to Yanmar and Isuzu engines.

Due to supply issues for engines, KCM Construction Machinery (KCM) will temporarily halt the production of its American excavators at its KCM factory located in Spartanburg, South Carolina. KCM stated in its announcement that the suspension will begin on May 1st.

KCM stated that in mid-January, the engine supplier Hino Motors informed KCM that it had not yet obtained the 2021 EPA emission certification for four engine models, and that the future supply schedule for these models "had no clear prospects", involving the four Hino engine models: J05E, J08E, P11C and E13C. 
According to the 2020-21 "Equipment World Specification Guide", Shinko is currently the only excavator manufacturer using Hino engines. The power of Hino engines ranges from 127 to 510 horsepower. Shinko also uses Isuzu engines in its large excavators. 
KCM stated that although they are currently considering alternative engine suppliers, the production of their SK170LC, SK210LC, SK260LC, SK300LC, SK350LC, SK390LC and SK500LC models will be suspended once the current certified engine inventory is exhausted. 
KCM stated that the four Hino engines are also used in machines imported to the United States, including six excavator models (SK210HLC, SK230SRLC, SK270SRLC, SK380SRLC, SK500LC and SK850LC) and five crawler crane models (CK850G, CK1100G, CK1200G, CK1600G and CK2750G). These machines were imported from two factories in Japan to the United States. The import will be suspended until these models can be equipped with engines that meet the US EPA emission standards. 
The US JCB dealers will continue to sell the inventory of excavators with EPA-certified engines, including the remaining stock of the affected models, compact excavators, excavators ranging from 7 tons to 13 tons, and the CK3300G crawler crane. The product support activities will also continue. 
The company has no timetable for resuming production of excavators in the United States. KCM said in a statement: "We are currently studying the impact of the production halt and sales on our business performance. We will issue announcements promptly if any further information needs to be disclosed in the future." 
The statement continued: "We are considering installing backup engines for the excavators affected by this supply disruption. We are committed to resolving this issue as soon as possible." 
Shindo recently announced its ED160BR-7 wheel loader, which combines the functions of an excavator and a bulldozer into one. This is a wheeled excavator with true bulldozer capabilities, thanks to its large-capacity six-directional bulldozer bucket. This equipment is not included in the list of affected devices.
