Due to the shortage of engine supplies from Yanagiba, Sumitomo Steel of the United States temporarily switched to using engines from Yamatake and Isuzu.
According to foreign media reports, due to the failure of four of Hino Motors' engines to obtain the 2021 US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certification, Hitachi Construction Machinery USA has chosen Yanmar and Isuzu to supply engines for its excavators and cranes.
In January 2021, Hino informed Shindo that its four engine models had not yet obtained the 2021 EPA emission certification, and stated that the future supply schedule for these engines "had no clear prospects".
Subsequently, JFE USA announced that due to engine supply issues, it would be forced to lay off 75% of the employees at the excavator factory in Moore, South Carolina.
"The factory in South Carolina will lay off 100 employees. We will have a more accurate understanding of the engine supply time before the summer, and then we will re-evaluate the personnel requirements. Once the date for the factory to resume operations is determined, JFE Steel will offer all the dismissed employees the opportunity to return to work as soon as possible," JFE Steel America explained.
The company further stated that switching to Yanmar and Isuzu engines was a "major project that requires significant investment in engineering and design resources".
Globally, Shodan and Hino will maintain close ties. However, it is worth noting that even if Hino obtains the certification, Shodan USA does not plan to reuse Hino engines. Instead, its North American products will focus on the development of Yanmar and Isuzu specific models.
Jack Fendrick, the COO and Vice President of Shinko USA, said: "We are pleased to announce that the two parties have reached an agreement. The engine supply solution for Shinko's excavators and cranes in the USA has been activated. Our focus is not only on ensuring the adequate supply of a full range of products equipped with qualified engines, but also on maintaining Shinko's quality and performance, which has always been the cornerstone for the success of our dealers and customers."
According to the description from JFE USA, Yanma will supply engines for the SK170, SK210, SK230SR, SK260 and SK270SR excavators; and Isuzu will provide power for the SK300, SK350, SK380SR, SK390 and SK500 models of excavators.
In addition, Isuzu also supplies engines for Koki's CK 800, CK 850, CK 1100, CK 1200, CK 1600, CK 2000 and CK 2750 crawler cranes.
Shinsei Kogyo stated that most of its vehicles equipped with Yanmar or Isuzu engines will have an increase in horsepower. Currently, the components of excavators and cranes using Hino engines in North America "can be obtained from Shinsei Kogyo dealers at any time. These machines comply with the EPA's emission requirements and are not affected by this incident."
